If you are experiencing homelessness or do not have a safe place to stay overnight, Bendigo Winter Night Shelter may be able to help during the winter operating season.

The shelter provides a warm place to stay, a meal, shower access and connection to support services.

The shelter provides:

  • A warm place to sleep

  • A hot evening meal

  • Shower and bathroom facilities

  • Transport to the accommodation site

  • Connection to local support services

Our goal is to provide a safe and respectful environment for everyone who attends.

Winter Operating Season

The shelter operates 7 nights per week during winter.

Guests typically meet at a central Bendigo location before transport to the shelter site.

Season:
June – Mid September

Typical Night Schedule:
5:00 PM – Meet at the Bendigo pickup location (Salvation Army Gravel Hill)

5:30 PM – Guests sign in and board the BWNS bus

6:00 PM – Arrival at the shelter accommodation

6:30 PM – Shared evening meal

8:30 PM – Free time / rest

10:30 PM – Lights out

7:00 AM – Morning tea / coffee

8:15 AM – Bus returns guests to Bendigo CBD

How to Access the Shelter:
Before you can stay with us you need to be interviewed and registered by our team.

What to Expect:
Guests arriving at the shelter are welcomed by volunteers and offered a meal and a place to rest.

The atmosphere is calm and respectful. Volunteers are present to support the evening routine and help create a safe space for everyone.

Basic facilities such as bedding, showers and seating areas are available.

Shelter Facilities

Campers learn the basics of soccer, basketball, swimming, and tennis in fun, age-appropriate sessions led by patient, experienced coaches—ensuring every child gets attention, encouragement, and a chance to shine.


Shelter Guidelines

To make Bendigo Winter Night Shelter a safe place for everyone, we expect:

Guests will not be intoxicated, or substance affected on arrival at the meeting point or the accommodation facility

Guests will not use or be in possession of illicit drugs or substances at the meeting point or at the accommodation facility

Guests will not consume or be in possession of illicit drugs or substances at the accommodation facility or engage in the use of these substances on the sites of the allocated accommodation, for the entire length of your stay

Guests will not be in possession of any type of offensive weapon at the meeting point or at the accommodation facility

Guests will only carry with them sufficient belonging/s for one night at the accommodation facility and will be responsible for the security of their own belonging at all times

Guests will be allocated their room at the accommodation facility each night

Guests will agree to a baggage search at the meeting point before being allowed to stay in the accommodation facility

Guests will not use violent, aggressive or disruptive behaviour at the meeting point or accommodation facility

Guests will not use offensive language at the meeting point or accommodation facility

Guests will treat other guests and volunteers with respect and with maintain a code of harmony and safety for all

Guests will be supplied with a weekend pack provided by MADCOW on Fridays 8am-9am from their breakfast site St Paul’s Hall, Myers Street, opposite Coles.

Guests will only smoke in designated areas and allocated times at the accommodation facility

The following consequences of any breach of behaviour may look like this:

Denied entrance to the accommodation facility (denied boarding the BWNS bus)

Asked to leave the accommodation facility

Be subject to a ban

Subject to conditions of a support plan around your needs as they would apply to the accommodation facility, or

Permanently uninvited from all BWNS accommodation facility.

BWNS works alongside local organisations that provide housing, health, and social support services.

Guests who wish to access additional assistance may be connected with these services where appropriate.
